When looking for a financial planner, there are several points to consider.
In Quebec, any individual claiming to be a financial planner must be an IQPF graduate and have a financial planning certificate issued by the Autorité des marchés financiers (AMF).
It's the law.
The Ordre des comptables agréés du Québec, the Ordre des CGA du Québec, the Ordre des administrateurs agréés du Québec, and the Chambre des notaires du Québec, according to an agreement with the AMF, can also authorize their members to use the financial planning title, as long as they are IQPF graduates.
What's more, according to the Regulation respecting titles similar to the title of financial planner, in the Act respecting the distribution of financial products and services, the following titles are similar to the title of financial planner and may not be used by anyone:
(10) any title including one of the following five expressions, in which the words composing each expression either appear together or are separated by other words:
(a) financial planner;
(b) financial planning;
(c) financial adviser
(d) financial consultant;
(e) financial co-ordinator.
Before anything else, make sure your financial planner meets the requirements of the law!
